However, most of the AOV’s that I needed for the SET_GEO_BTY, UTILITY, and MOTION_VECTOR layers would either render blank or be completely broken. Rendering with my GPU cut my render times in half, so I was keen on utilising it across all render layers. Because of this, I decided to take advantage of Arnold 6’s new GPU rendering capability. One concern for this project was renders taking too long and completely taking over my PC. This seemed to give the lighting a more accurate tone that was more diffuse and subtle. Therefore, I took the HDRI into NukeX and used the roto paint node to paint over the sun, and spread out the light from behind the clouds a little more. Here I could see that the sun was way too strong and harsh, so I needed to soften/diffuse the light somehow. After receiving guidance from Giacomo on the rough direction of the sun and how cloudy the sky was on the day, I set off my first test render. I then moved on to lighting using the HDRI. As you can see in the images below, projection is extremely important as, without it, the CG cant get physically accurate bounce lighting to achieve a more realistic result. I then assigned an aiShadowMatte shader to it and made the “background colour” be a projection of the plate from the shot camera’s perspective. By using the tracked camera, I was able to add the plate to the camera’s environment settings and model over any geometry that could cast shadows or reflections on the car. As this set is very simple, using simple low-poly models sufficed. Once all the texturing and lookdev was complete, I started making the set geometry. Following this, what I received was a plate, tracked camera cache, car model and an HDRI that Giacomo also found online that had similar lighting conditions and scenery to the footage. Giacomo would then composite the car onto a plate, that he filmed and 3D tracked using NukeX. My task was to texture and lookdev this free BMW model that Giacomo found online, as well as light and render the shot. I decided to make a render scene from scratch for a small side project that Giacomo Verri, asked me to help him out with.
